John Deere settles right-to-repair lawsuit for $99 million

Under the proposed agreement, John Deere will provide access to essential repair materials, including diagnostic tools and manuals, for the next decade. The company committed to enabling owners and independent repair shops to perform diagnostics and reprogramming on equipment while offline by the end of 2026. These concessions aim to bypass the mandatory dealer-only service requirements that previously hindered independent maintenance.

The settlement funds are earmarked for farmers who paid for authorized repairs between January 2018 and the date of preliminary approval. While the company denies any wrongdoing, it remains under scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission regarding similar anti-competitive practices. This deal provides a window into how manufacturers are shifting policies under mounting legal and regulatory pressure to grant owners control over their own machinery.
