Logitech to Segment Mouse Production Ahead of EU Battery Mandates

Logitech’s gaming division head, Robin Piispanen, confirmed the strategy during a recent discussion on product design philosophy. The decision hinges on the engineering trade-offs required to make lithium-ion batteries user-accessible. Current Logitech peripherals utilize lightweight soft-sided battery packs connected by thin cables, a design choice Piispanen argues is optimized for weight and performance but poses safety risks if handled by untrained consumers.

To comply with upcoming European directives, Logitech will shift to rigid hard-pack batteries for its regional inventory. These casings are designed to prevent the accidental punctures that can lead to lithium-ion fires. While this shift ensures safety for European users—who will also receive access to certified replacement parts—Logitech maintains that the added weight and design complexity of hard-pack cells render them inferior for the global market, where consumer demand for repairability remains secondary to device portability and mass.
