UK Wealth Sector Trails Singapore and US in Avaloq Competitiveness Index

The United Kingdom has slipped into the middle tier of global wealth management hubs, trailing behind the United States, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. A new index from Zurich-based Avaloq evaluates 15 international markets, prioritizing structural competitiveness and long-term growth drivers over simple asset size.

UK Wealth Sector Trails Singapore and US in Avaloq Competitiveness Index

Avaloq’s assessment measures 15 markets across five dimensions: macroeconomic conditions, financial maturity, demographics, regulatory frameworks, and digital adoption. While the UK retains high scores for its sophisticated regulatory environment and deep capital markets, it faces significant pressure from broader macroeconomic constraints. This performance disparity highlights a shift where traditional European powerhouses are being challenged by markets that offer a more balanced combination of growth drivers.

Singapore demonstrates consistent excellence across all categories, whereas the US excels through market depth and high participation rates. The UAE, meanwhile, leverages favorable demographic trends and rapid digital integration to climb the rankings. Critics of British economic policy may point to these figures as evidence of an increasingly challenging environment for high-net-worth individuals, particularly following recent tax changes and the abolition of the non-domicile system.

Despite these headwinds, the UK remains a top-tier center for financial infrastructure. Suman Rao, managing director for UK and Ireland at Avaloq, emphasized that the sector’s enduring strengths provide a solid foundation for future growth. Success for wealth managers now depends on leveraging these established capabilities while navigating a global landscape where historical advantages are no longer sufficient to guarantee dominance.
