Whisker's AI Litter-Robot Struggles to Identify Cats

The $899 Litter-Robot 5 Pro promises high-tech convenience by using facial recognition to track individual feline bathroom habits. After six months of testing the flagship device, the system failed to distinguish between two cats, undermining the core appeal of its health-monitoring features for multi-pet households.

Whisker's AI Litter-Robot Struggles to Identify Cats

Whisker designed the 5 Pro as the pinnacle of pet sanitation, integrating a dual-camera array and machine learning algorithms to map usage patterns. While the mechanical function—rotating a drum to sift waste into a sealed bin—successfully eliminates daily scooping chores and odors, the software layer remains unreliable. The device, released late last year alongside the $599 Evo model, relies on sensors and visual identification to assign bathroom data to specific animals.

In practice, the system frequently misidentifies users, rendering the promised health insights inaccurate for owners of multiple cats. Despite the sophisticated hardware intended to flag potential medical issues through tracking, the inability to consistently distinguish between individual animals limits the machine's utility to a glorified, automated litter box rather than a reliable diagnostic tool.
