OpenAI targets classrooms with dedicated ChatGPT for teens

Following intense scrutiny over mental health risks and academic integrity, OpenAI is rolling out a specialized ChatGPT version for younger users. The platform introduces mandatory safety filters and a Study Mode designed to pivot students away from automated homework completion toward guided, step-by-step problem solving.

The new interface integrates educational tools, including interactive quizzes and visual learning aids, to discourage the shortcut culture that has plagued schools since the chatbot’s debut. When the system detects potential cheating, it proactively triggers prompts for Study Mode, offering scaffolding questions rather than direct answers. Parents and guardians gain oversight through updated family controls, allowing them to enforce default settings and manage usage periods remotely.

While OpenAI asserts that these protections align with developmental science, the efficacy of these safeguards remains an open question. Teen users have historically proven adept at bypassing software restrictions, and the ease of circumventing these new guardrails is yet to be stress-tested outside of controlled environments. To bolster its educational positioning, the company has also partnered with CodeAI to provide curriculum support, aiming to shift the teen experience from passive consumption to a more structured engagement with artificial intelligence.
