The research, which evaluated 40 distinct vehicle technologies, identified smart ignition and automated HVAC systems as top performers in customer satisfaction. Smart ignition led the category with just 2.4 reported problems per 100 vehicles. These features succeed because they automate routine tasks, whereas more intrusive tech—such as dashboard-mounted passenger screens—often languishes unused. Over one-third of owners with passenger displays reported never interacting with them, while only 6 percent use them regularly.
Automakers are currently struggling to balance innovation with usability, particularly regarding automation. While hands-free "Level 2 Plus" systems like Ford’s BlueCruise or Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suggest a leap forward, owners expressed higher comfort with standard Level 2 systems that maintain a clear, assisted role. Doron Hikry, director of customer success at JD Power, noted that the industry must prioritize simplicity over complexity. The data suggests that when technology requires effort or creates stress, it fails to resonate, regardless of its sophisticated engineering.
