Biden Administration Authorizes New Billion-Dollar Arms Package for Israel

The Biden administration has quietly approved a massive new shipment of weapons to Israel, including over 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 25 F-35A fighter jets. This $2.5 billion package arrives despite mounting international pressure and internal warnings regarding the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

The authorization marks the latest in more than 100 separate arms transfers facilitated by the White House since the October 7 attacks. These 2,000-pound munitions, capable of leveling entire city blocks, have been utilized extensively in densely populated areas of Gaza, leading to widespread civilian casualties. U.N. officials previously identified the use of such heavy ordnance in areas like the Jabalia refugee camp as potentially constituting war crimes.

Political fallout has been swift. Senator Bernie Sanders labeled the decision "obscene," arguing that the administration cannot simultaneously plead for the protection of Palestinian civilians and supply the weaponry used to destroy their homes. Similarly, Senator Chris Van Hollen asserted that the White House must leverage its military support to secure concrete commitments from the Israeli government, rather than fast-tracking shipments without conditions. Despite reports of famine and the International Court of Justice’s ruling on the plausibility of genocide, the administration continues to maintain that it lacks sufficient leverage over its key ally.
