Musicians abandon Ed Sheeran tour in protest of Macklemore’s removal

The fallout centers on New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who reportedly rallied venue owners to bar the tour unless Macklemore was removed. The rapper had faced backlash from pro-Israel groups after performing “Hind’s Hall,” a song dedicated to Palestinian victims of the conflict in Gaza. Sheeran has claimed he was unable to prevent the decision, but the explanation has failed to appease his peers.

Finneas, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Aaron Rowe have all formally withdrawn from the tour. In statements, the artists characterized the move as an unacceptable use of billionaire influence to silence dissent. Beoga, co-founders of the Irish Artist for Palestine Movement, directly cited Kraft’s history of funding pro-Israel lobbying groups like AIPAC as evidence of a coordinated effort to suppress speech regarding the conflict.

Pressure is mounting from outside the music industry as well. US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly backed a boycott of Sheeran’s music, warning that stadium owners are setting a dangerous precedent for artistic expression. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel has urged fans to stop supporting the tour, arguing that Sheeran’s claim of neutrality is effectively an endorsement of the status quo. As fan accounts and fellow performers join the growing chorus of condemnation, the incident is being increasingly likened to the cultural boycotts of apartheid-era South Africa.
