Google opens smart home ecosystem to third-party AI agents

Google is transforming its smart home infrastructure by allowing external AI agents, such as Claude and Open Claw, to interface directly with connected devices. Through the new Model Context Protocol, these agents can now analyze event history and execute tasks, effectively turning the home into a reactive, data-driven environment.

The integration bypasses the standard Google Home interface, granting third-party tools access to the underlying data layer. Users can now leverage agents for tasks like cross-camera analysis or generating custom dashboards. While Google’s own Gemini for Home remains the primary voice assistant for Nest speakers, the new protocol enables external agents to send audio messages and monitor device states. Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, noted that this architecture allows for complex reasoning across home data, moving beyond simple command-and-control functions.

Access is currently restricted to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the US, requiring a configured Google Cloud project to initiate. Safety remains a primary concern; Google has implemented rate limits and explicitly blocked agents from operating security-critical hardware like door locks. Despite these safeguards, the company warns that connecting third-party agents could lead to unexpected behavior, placing the burden of oversight on the user.

This shift signals a broader strategic pivot for Google, which is increasingly positioning itself as the foundational infrastructure layer for the smart home market. By providing the plumbing for AI-driven automation, the company aims to emulate the role of AWS in the software world. Whether developers commit to this latest platform remains uncertain, given Google's history of sunsetting previous smart home initiatives like Works with Nest and Android @ Home.
