UK Launches £550 Million Offensive Against Money Laundering

The British government has unveiled a sweeping three-year strategy to combat financial crime, pledging to recruit 500 additional staff and invest at least £550 million. The initiative targets the dismantling of illicit networks and aims to centralize oversight of lawyers and accountants under the Financial Conduct Authority by 2028.

At the core of the plan is an aggressive push for asset recovery and expanded enforcement powers. The Treasury and Home Office intend to establish a new National Crime Agency Asset Recovery Office and initiate a public-private pilot program. Legislation will follow to grant the UK Financial Intelligence Unit broader authority to harvest intelligence, specifically targeting suspicious activity reports. The first year of the rollout focuses heavily on disrupting Russian-speaking professional money laundering operations.

While the government highlights recent successes—including 4,085 money laundering convictions in the 2025/26 financial year—critics remain cautious. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) warned that structural changes alone do not guarantee results. Veronica Stratford-Tuke, a research fellow at the think tank, questioned the sustainability of the funding model, which relies on the Economic Crime Levy paid by regulated firms. She emphasized that while information sharing between banks and law enforcement is improving, the real challenge lies in bridging the gap between data collection and actual prevention in sectors like fintech and crypto assets.
