Elon Musk floats Hyperloop vision for Texas corridor

Elon Musk has proposed a high-speed transit link connecting Austin and San Antonio, claiming his tunneling startup could slash travel times to under 30 minutes. While The Boring Company expressed enthusiasm for the infrastructure project, the ambitious vision follows a history of abandoned plans in other major U.S. cities.

The proposal surfaced in response to an AI-generated video showcasing futuristic space colonies, which Musk championed as a blueprint for civilization. Despite his public optimism, the company’s track record remains uneven. While it maintains an operational tunnel network in Las Vegas and recently secured $3 billion in funding from United Arab Emirates-led investors, previous efforts in Chicago, Los Angeles, and the Northeast corridor failed to materialize.

Historian Jill Lepore has critiqued this approach, noting that Musk’s grand technological visions often draw inspiration from pulp science fiction that stands in stark contrast to his own political ideology. For now, the Austin-San Antonio project exists only as a stated goal, leaving observers to weigh the company’s fresh capital against its history of unfulfilled transit promises.
