Waymo Targets Teen Riders to Fuel Robotaxi Growth

Nashville teenagers as young as 13 can now hail Waymo robotaxis, marking the second city to adopt the company’s youth-focused accounts. By targeting a demographic traditionally reliant on parents or public transit, the Alphabet-owned firm aims to capitalize on a massive new user base to sustain its rapid expansion.

Waymo Targets Teen Riders to Fuel Robotaxi Growth

The Nashville launch serves as a blueprint for a broader rollout planned for the coming months. While the service is currently restricted to mature markets with favorable local regulations, Waymo expects to scale teen access across its network. Teen accounts require a linked parent or guardian profile, yet they grant minors independence to travel within the service area with up to three guests.

This strategy arrives as Waymo experiences a surge in demand, with paid trips climbing from 50,000 per week in May 2024 to over 500,000 recently. The company has aggressively entered new territories, including Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa, while integrating its fleet into the Lyft app. For parents, the autonomous service offers an alternative to letting newly licensed teenagers drive themselves or relying on public transportation, though the company has yet to detail how it will verify the ages of teen passengers.
