Public resistance to AI data centers reaches critical mass

The survey of 1,503 voters reveals a sharp partisan split regarding the infrastructure required for generative technology. While Trump supporters remain relatively divided, 74 percent of Kamala Harris voters express firm opposition. Among those against further development, over half advocate for strict regulatory limits, while 38 percent demand an outright ban on new projects.

Public anxiety centers on tangible local costs rather than abstract digital disruption. Water consumption and environmental degradation top the list of grievances at 32 percent, followed by community disruption and a general distrust of AI systems. These findings align with broader trends observed in March and May, where polling indicated that AI infrastructure projects struggle to gain traction against concerns over ICE and local land use. Despite the intensity of this opposition, voters currently rank data center construction as a secondary priority compared to broader midterm election issues.
