Bitget chief executive Gracy Chen stated that the methodology behind the breach aligns with established patterns of North Korean cyber organizations. These groups frequently target open-source software and digital exchanges to generate revenue for the state’s nuclear weapons program. While the exchange has halted transactions, Chen confirmed the company maintains a $464 million user protection fund intended to cover the losses incurred during the incident.
This theft surpasses the $340 million hack recorded in September, which previously held the title for the largest digital currency heist of 2026. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs reports that North Korean actors are responsible for approximately three-quarters of all crypto thefts identified throughout the year. Although Bitget officials are working to address the security failure, no timeline has been provided for the resumption of platform withdrawals.
