PNOĒ 2.0 brings lab-grade metabolic testing to the gym floor

Sporting a design reminiscent of a comic-book villain’s gear, the PNOĒ 2.0 mask aims to simplify clinical-grade fitness testing. Launching October 1, the device allows users to self-administer metabolic assessments in just eight minutes, potentially moving high-end health data from specialized sports labs into mainstream fitness centers and pharmacies.

The device measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide exhalation to calculate VO₂ max, a key indicator of cardiorespiratory health. While metabolic testing has existed for a century, it has historically relied on bulky, expensive equipment requiring trained operators. By automating the process and detaching the electronic sensor from the disposable silicone mask, PNOĒ enables shared hardware across multiple users.

CEO Apostolos Atsalakis frames the device as a wellness tool rather than a diagnostic one, noting that it currently lacks FDA clearance for medical recommendations. Despite this, the company tracks 23 biomarkers, including resting metabolic rate and metabolic flexibility. These metrics provide a more granular look at body composition than standard wearable heart-rate estimates.

Founded by Atsalakis and Panos Papadiamantis, the company has raised $22 million and reached profitability while serving high-profile clients like Equinox and the NBA. With 110 employees and a subscription-based business model, PNOĒ plans to pursue a Series B funding round within the next year to accelerate its global expansion.
