While SpaceX maintains a relentless launch cadence—having deployed 552 satellites since early July alone—Amazon remains stuck at 396 total units. Despite assurances from Amazon Leo launch systems director Melissa Wuerl regarding a path to increase deployment frequency, the company has not completed a launch in twelve weeks.
Amazon's struggles stem from persistent failures within its roster of launch partners. The Vulcan rocket, intended as the successor to the Atlas V, has been grounded by the U.S. Space Force since February 2026 due to an unresolved booster anomaly. Simultaneously, Blue Origin's New Glenn vehicle remains sidelined after the destruction of its primary launchpad in May. In an effort to mitigate these setbacks, Amazon recently secured six additional launches with Arianespace, though the firm currently lacks the orbital presence required to mount a meaningful challenge to Starlink’s dominance.
