AOC Targets Campus Rape Culture Following Reopened Cornell Assault Case

Standing in Ithaca, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez denounced a system that shields students accused of sexual violence while forcing survivors out of their academic lives. Her remarks came as Tompkins County prosecutors announced they are reopening a 2024 assault investigation involving seven members of a Cornell University fraternity.

The case centers on an October 2024 incident at the Chi Phi fraternity house. According to a lawsuit filed by the victim, identified as Jane Doe, she was coerced into consuming a substance described as ketamine before being sexually assaulted. The complaint alleges one of the attackers then broadcast an invitation to other members via Snapchat to join the assault. Attorney Thomas Giuffra claims the university failed to provide critical evidence, including the group chat messages, to the District Attorney's office during the initial inquiry.

District Attorney Matthew Van Houten confirmed his office is re-examining the allegations, noting that current details differ sharply from the initial reports filed in 2024. While Cornell officials have rejected claims of inadequate sanctioning—stating that some students were expelled and others suspended—student journalists at the Cornell Daily Sun have publicly challenged the university's lack of transparency regarding its Title IX findings. Ocasio-Cortez, who is currently touring New York ahead of a potential 2028 Senate bid, labeled the incident a reflection of systemic moral failure within elite institutions, vowing that such environments can no longer be protected.
