Launched in 2024, Gems allowed users to create specialized AI agents—ranging from coding partners to nutritionists—designed to execute repetitive instructions without manual re-entry. While the migration process is handled by Google, ensuring existing work remains accessible, the transition highlights a recurring pattern of feature consolidation that has long defined the company’s product development cycle. Users will retain access to their current Gems until the November deadline.

Despite the rebranding, the user interface for these tools remains rooted in technical commands. Rather than offering a conversational flow, Google expects users to trigger specific skills by typing a forward slash in a task thread. This design choice favors utility over the intuitive, agentic interaction found in competitors like Meta’s Muse, potentially alienating casual users who prefer natural language prompts over rigid syntax.
