Tesla Pushes Back Roadster Reveal as Storms Threaten Outdoor Launch

Forecasts of severe weather in Waco, Texas, have forced Tesla to postpone the highly anticipated reveal of its second-generation Roadster from October 1 to October 15. The company confirmed the delay on X, citing the necessity of an outdoor venue to showcase the vehicle’s unique SpaceX-integrated thruster technology.

The project, which first debuted as a concept in 2017, has faced a series of delays that have stretched nearly a decade. Elon Musk previously toyed with the idea of scheduling the launch for April Fools’ Day, joking that the date provided a convenient excuse should the timeline slip once again. Despite the prolonged wait, the company continues to hold significant capital from early adopters, including $50,000 deposits and $250,000 payments for "Founders Series" reservations.

Development stalled for years until Musk directed his team to overhaul the design, specifically incorporating cold gas thrusters to facilitate the car’s promised flight capabilities. Even with the upcoming reveal, production remains distant; Musk has indicated that the vehicle will likely require at least another year of development after the event before it reaches the assembly line. Critics, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have previously expressed frustration over the extended timeline, highlighting the gap between Tesla’s ambitious promises and the reality of the vehicle’s production schedule.
