Wealthy Investors Pivot Toward Private Markets Despite Cooling Returns

Seventy-two percent of wealthy investors now hold private market assets, a significant jump from 50 percent last year, according to the Barclays Private Markets Annual Report 2026. While appetite for non-public investments is surging, investors are simultaneously tightening their criteria for manager quality and portfolio construction.

Wealthy Investors Pivot Toward Private Markets Despite Cooling Returns

The survey of 600 high-net-worth individuals across the UK, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa reveals a paradox of enthusiasm and caution. Although 60 percent of respondents intend to increase their allocations in the coming years, the average portion of portfolios dedicated to these assets has actually dipped from 30 percent to 27 percent. This shift suggests a move toward quality over quantity, with investors prioritizing due diligence and access in a market previously rattled by concerns over credit defaults and liquidity.

Generational divides are driving much of this momentum, particularly among Millennials, 84 percent of whom plan to boost their exposure. Technology remains the primary target for growth, attracting 63 percent of interested capital, followed by healthcare and energy. Infrastructure is also seeing a resurgence, as both Blackstone and Hamilton Lane reinforce the narrative that private assets may soon outperform public equivalents. However, barriers persist: 53 percent of investors demand more transparent fee structures, and many remain wary of lengthy lock-up periods, highlighting a growing need for specialized advisory expertise as these instruments move further into the mainstream.
