Pentagon Data Breach Exposes Millions of Military Personnel Records

The Defense Manpower Data Center, a critical unit responsible for managing identity credentials and benefit entitlements for over 60 million individuals, confirmed the exposure of 2.8 million living personnel and 300,000 deceased records. Despite the scale of the theft, the Department of Defense maintains there is currently no evidence that the stolen data has been misused, though officials have declined to clarify how they reached that assessment or if they have established contact with the unidentified intruders.

This incident follows a separate, high-profile breach at the FBI earlier in September, which was attributed to the hacking group ShinyHunters and affected the majority of the agency's staff. Security experts view such systematic targeting of federal data as a profound counterintelligence threat, echoing the 2015 Office of Personnel Management breach where foreign actors compromised the records of 22 million government employees. The DMDC remains the military’s primary identity management provider, overseeing access to sensitive computer systems, physical bases, and retirement benefits.
