Photon Raises $4.5M to Replace Mobile Apps with Messaging Agents

Inside a San Francisco church on September 17, startup founders held a funeral for mobile applications, complete with a coffin for app icons. The theatrical stunt marked the launch of a new mission for Photon: convincing developers that the future of software lies in messaging-based agents rather than standalone downloads.

Photon Raises $4.5M to Replace Mobile Apps with Messaging Agents

Photon’s seed funding round, co-led by Gradient and A*, brings $4.5 million to its platform for building agents that operate via iMessage, WhatsApp, and other messaging channels. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian argues that user fatigue toward installing new apps makes the current ecosystem ripe for disruption. By leveraging the platforms users already inhabit, Photon aims to bypass the discovery bottleneck that plagues traditional software development.

The startup provides a suite of tools, including a unified API and observability infrastructure, to help developers transition from clunky apps to conversational agents. While the company maintains an open-source version of its technology, it has shifted to a managed subscription model, boasting 99.95% uptime and SOC 2 compliance to attract enterprise clients in fintech and healthcare. Current users range from insurance companies like Corgi to AI email clients like Slashy.

With over 40,000 developer sign-ups and a 10x increase in revenue over the last four months, the company is betting that its infrastructure will eventually facilitate more than just human interaction. Tian envisions a future of agent-to-agent communication, where specialized bots coordinate with one another to execute complex tasks like travel planning or financial management. As adoption grows, Photon is positioning itself as the primary connective layer for this emerging automated economy.
