Family of Renee Good Sues Over ICE Killing and Federal Conspiracy

The family of Renee Good filed dual lawsuits Thursday against the federal government, challenging both the fatal shooting of the 37-year-old by an ICE agent and an alleged conspiracy to violate civil rights during a militarized operation in Minneapolis.

Family of Renee Good Sues Over ICE Killing and Federal Conspiracy

On January 7, ICE agent Jonathan Ross killed Good, a poet and mother of three, during an operation known as "Operation Metro Surge." The lawsuits, filed in the US District Court for the District of Minnesota, seek damages for wrongful death and negligence, while also targeting top officials—including Stephen Miller and former Secretary Kristi Noem—for their role in orchestrating the deployment. Attorneys for the family argue the operation was designed to target minority communities through intimidation, violating the Ku Klux Klan Act by conspiring to deny equal protection under the law.

Becca Good, who witnessed the shooting while filming the agents, has publicly decried the loss of her partner and the government's subsequent attempts to justify the killing by labeling the incident as an act of domestic terrorism. The legal complaint asserts that the couple was unarmed and exercising their First Amendment rights when the confrontation occurred. Beyond the individual shooting, the litigation aims to hold the administration accountable for a broader pattern of using armed, masked federal agents to patrol American streets, which the family's legal team describes as an unconstitutional invasion of urban centers.
