While PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) remains the benchmark for the Pro model, QSSR functions without the dedicated machine learning hardware found in the higher-end system. According to Sony principal graphics R&D engineer Daniel Craig, developers will need to balance render resolutions more carefully on the standard console, likely targeting 1440p output rather than the 4K standard seen on the Pro. Despite these hardware limitations, QSSR serves as a near-seamless integration for titles already supporting PSSR, requiring only minimal tuning from development teams.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei lead the rollout, with patches arriving today to provide the feature as an additional graphics toggle. Digital Foundry suggests the technology holds significant potential to mitigate the visual fidelity issues caused by low-resolution rendering, which has plagued several titles throughout the current generation. By offering the toolkit broadly to all PlayStation partners, Sony intends to provide a pathway for developers to enhance image sharpness across the existing install base without requiring new hardware.
