Pope Leo XIV rejects machine-made art as lacking human soul

“Algorithms lack the spark of humanity,” Pope Leo XIV declared on Friday, drawing a sharp ontological divide between the creative spirit and statistical calculation. The Bishop of Rome warned that as machines ingest millions of human-made images to synthesize new visuals, the fundamental dignity of artistic endeavor faces an existential threat.

Pope Leo XIV rejects machine-made art as lacking human soul

The Supreme Pontiff’s latest stance on the encroachment of artificial intelligence builds upon his May encyclical, which prioritized human dignity amid rapid technological automation. He argues that the difference between human expression and machine output is not merely aesthetic but rooted in the unique nature of the creator. By framing AI art as a product of cold data processing rather than genuine inspiration, he has positioned the Church as a bulwark against the normalization of synthetic media.

Despite his firm stance, the Vatican has become a target for corporate influence. According to reports from the New York Times, the AI firm Anthropic has attempted to lobby the Holy See to reconsider its position regarding non-human consciousness. These efforts to shift the papal perspective have so far yielded little progress, as the Church remains committed to its view of art as an inherently human pursuit.
