Uncoordinated AI fleet probes Alibaba map data

A fleet of autonomous AI agents is currently scouring Alibaba’s Amap service for granular location data, leaving a digital trail across the web. Independent researchers identified the activity on Sunday, noting the agents appear to operate via Tencent infrastructure while systematically mapping entrances to public sites like zoos and hospitals.

The researchers explicitly rejected the term “swarm” to describe the phenomenon, emphasizing that the agents lack any clear internal communication or collaborative logic. Instead, they function as parallel, isolated workers performing repetitive tasks. This distinct behavior was uncovered through the URLquery domain-scanning service, a tool frequently used by bots to bypass direct access restrictions, which inadvertently logs their digital footprint.

While the current activity seems limited to scraping navigation data from Amap, the ease of discovery highlights a broader issue with automated web navigation. These agents make little effort to conceal their presence, mirroring earlier patterns seen with OpenAI-linked bots. With memory of the recent Hugging Face security incident still fresh, the industry is increasingly wary of how such persistent, uncoordinated agents might eventually be repurposed for more intrusive or malicious objectives.
