The new 800XL is available for preorder at 219.99 dollars, with units scheduled to begin shipping in April 2027. While it maintains the aesthetic of the original hardware, the internal architecture integrates modern connectivity, including an HDMI port and four USB-A slots for external drives and peripherals. It ships with an updated joystick, now featuring eight buttons to improve compatibility with contemporary control schemes.
Functionality remains a priority for the project, as the system includes a cartridge slot compatible with legacy software from the 400, 800, XL, and XE series. Users without original cartridges can access a library of 25 pre-installed titles, such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. Beyond gaming, the system supports loading software directly from flash drives, offering a bridge between 1980s computing and current hardware standards.
