Switzerland Leads Global Capitalism Rankings

Switzerland currently holds the top spot in the 2025 Global Capitalism Index, edging out the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, and Singapore. Published by the University of Virginia, the report evaluates 161 nations based on market economics, private property protections, and the freedom of trade and capital.

Switzerland Leads Global Capitalism Rankings

The index, compiled by the university’s Karsh Institute of Democracy and Darden School of Business, reveals a broader downward trend in capitalist conditions worldwide over the last 16 years. While Central Asian nations show improvement, Western Europe and Latin America have experienced notable declines. Sierra Leone and Venezuela suffered the most significant drops, falling by 23.9 and 23.2 points respectively.

Researchers categorize these economies into four distinct archetypes. Entrepreneurial leaders like Switzerland and the U.S. excel in business formation, while corporate-heavy nations such as Japan and South Korea prioritize banking infrastructure over labor market flexibility. Despite these variations, the data highlights a persistent global weakness in capital markets and banking systems, with property rights remaining the primary divider between top-tier performers and the lowest-ranked nations, including Angola.
