Trump Administration Suspends Microsoft from Key Immigration Program

Claiming the system is rife with exploitation, the Trump administration has barred Microsoft and several other major tech firms from a federal program designed to hire foreign workers for permanent U.S. residency. Vice President JD Vance explicitly targeted the software giant, citing a pattern of displacing domestic talent with overseas labor.

Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling outlined the scale of the crackdown, noting that Microsoft and Adobe collectively requested nearly 3 million foreign workers. The administration highlighted that Microsoft secured over 230,000 H-1B visa approvals and more than 100,000 permanent labor certifications. According to Vance, these figures stand in stark contrast to the company’s domestic footprint, pointing to the layoff of 6,000 American employees last year while the firm simultaneously utilized 6,300 H-1B visas and roughly 3,000 green cards.

Beyond Microsoft, the administration is suspending participation for Adobe, Cognizant, and Infosys. These actions arrive as part of a wider effort to restrict foreign labor reliance within the technology sector, following a recently announced fee increase for H-1B visas. Microsoft has not yet issued a formal response to the allegations of systemic abuse regarding the labor certification process.
