While participants believed they had successfully adjusted their settings, their feeds remained unchanged. This practice allegedly extended to other safety updates, including instances where the platform withheld algorithmic modifications to measure user behavior.
Internal friction accompanied these tests. A product manager for Digital Well Being at TikTok explicitly warned that a placebo group undermined the company’s stated commitment to transparency and user control. Despite these objections, the lawsuit asserts that TikTok continued to market the "Algo Refresh" feature as a permanent reset rather than the temporary adjustment it actually functioned as. TikTok spokesperson Nathaniel Brown defended the company’s actions, noting that regular testing is standard industry practice to validate platform improvements.
