US Citizens Testify on ICE Abuses at Minnesota Hearing

Democratic lawmakers held a hearing in Minnesota on Friday to address the intensifying presence of federal immigration agents. Residents and local officials, including Attorney General Keith Ellison, testified about a pattern of aggressive tactics and civil rights violations targeting U.S. citizens during recent enforcement operations across the state.

Patty O’Keefe, a 36-year-old U.S. citizen, described a violent encounter where ICE agents surrounded her car, deployed pepper spray, and smashed windows after she attempted to monitor their actions. Following her arrest, she reported that agents taunted her by referencing the recent killing of Renee Good by a federal officer. During her eight-hour detention at the BH Whipple Federal Building in St. Paul, O’Keefe observed overcrowded cells holding dozens of people, many of whom were unable to sit or lie down, describing the scene as a deliberate display of cruelty.

Mubashir, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen of Somali descent, shared a similar ordeal from December. Despite his repeated attempts to present identification confirming his citizenship, officers tackled him and dismissed his legal status. He was shackled and threatened with deportation before a final review of his passport card secured his release. Both testimonies underscored a growing fear among Twin Cities residents that federal status provides no security against physical harm or arbitrary detention by immigration authorities.
