The company’s acquisition of 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band serves as the technical backbone for this expansion. This specific frequency is designed to bypass the traditional limitations of satellite connectivity, allowing signals to reach users inside buildings and through dense urban environments. This follows an earlier strategic purchase of 2GHz spectrum from EchoStar, signaling a multi-layered approach to building a robust direct-to-device network.
Regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission remains the final hurdle for the deal. Once cleared, SpaceX plans to leverage a new constellation of 15,000 V2 Starlink satellites. According to the company, these units will deliver a hundredfold increase in bandwidth compared to existing hardware. By operating a hybrid network that blends satellite coverage with terrestrial spectrum, SpaceX intends to eliminate cellular dead zones and provide consistent service regardless of a user's location.
