US Catholic Bishops Denounce Planned Livestream of Nidal Hasan Execution

Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, has condemned the Pentagon’s intention to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, labeling the move a barbaric promotion of a culture of death that must be reconsidered by the Department of Defense.

US Catholic Bishops Denounce Planned Livestream of Nidal Hasan Execution

The criticism follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s pledge to make the December execution of the Fort Hood shooter public. While the Pentagon maintains the plan, Vice President JD Vance cast uncertainty on the logistics Friday, telling reporters he remains unsure if the broadcast will actually occur. Vance, a Catholic convert, distanced himself from the spectacle, noting, "If it's ultimately livestreamed, I'm not going to be watching it."

Coakley’s intervention aligns with a broader coalition of opposition, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which warned that broadcasting the event would violate the absolute prohibition of torture. Jesuit priest James Martin reinforced the institutional stance, noting that the Church views the death penalty as inadmissible and the televising of such events as turning death into entertainment. The debate intensifies as activists and religious leaders draw parallels to a recent botched execution in Tennessee, arguing that the combination of these events is fueling momentum to challenge capital punishment at both the state and federal levels.
