Why the Yandex outage isn't silencing Russian disinformation

A viral chart claiming that Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian data centers crippled the Kremlin’s disinformation machine is misleading. While online bot traffic did indeed plummet following attacks on Yandex servers, experts warn that the decline reflects automated web indexing rather than the shutdown of state-sponsored troll farms.

Why the Yandex outage isn't silencing Russian disinformation

The data originates from Cloudflare, which tracked a sharp drop in requests from Yandex’s own web crawlers. These automated systems are essential for indexing websites and powering search engines, not for spreading political propaganda. According to the researcher known as antibot4navalny, the specific traffic decline is isolated to Yandex service activity and does not represent the broader landscape of Russian bot operations, which remain largely unaffected.

Despite this, the narrative that the strikes dealt a blow to digital influence campaigns continues to circulate. European Parliament member Tomáš Zdechovský shared diagrams on X suggesting that online activity tied to the far-right Alternative for Germany party dropped in tandem with the server outages. However, these claims conflate routine web infrastructure maintenance with the disruption of malicious disinformation networks. Computer scientist Raphael noted that the correlation between server downtime and the reduction of specific political bot traffic lacks a verified technical link.
