Asia’s Life Insurers Pivot to Wealth Management

Life insurance firms across Asia are aggressively expanding their footprint in the wealth management sector, betting that affluent clients need more than simple protection. By integrating succession planning and liquidity tools into their core offerings, these companies are positioning themselves to capture a share of the region's multi-trillion-dollar intergenerational wealth transfer.

Asia’s Life Insurers Pivot to Wealth Management

Major players including Singlife, Sun Life, and Manulife are scaling their private wealth divisions in Singapore, marking a shift from traditional insurance to holistic asset management. This transition is driven by a need to address the complexities of modern wealth, such as cross-border mobility and extended lifespans. Firms are investing heavily in senior talent and research to bridge what they identify as a critical education gap among high-net-worth individuals, who often lack integrated plans for their multi-phase lives.

Steven Ong, managing director for high-net-worth at Singlife, emphasizes that insurance is increasingly functioning as a sophisticated tool for business continuity and estate equalisation rather than just a safety net. This evolution coincides with data from Boston Consulting Group projecting that private wealth in the region will reach $99 trillion by 2029. As clients adopt "portfolio lives"—staying active well past traditional retirement age—insurers are moving to provide flexible structures that support long-term growth and liquidity across multiple jurisdictions. The strategy relies on transforming products into delivery mechanisms for expert advice, ensuring that legacy planning encompasses not only financial assets but also values and family governance.
