Democrats Rebrand 'Public Option' as Billionaire-Backed Alternative

With polling showing a plurality of Americans favor replacing for-profit insurance with a single-payer system, a group of Democratic lawmakers is pushing back. Backed by hedge fund manager Stephen Mandel, the group launched 'Medicare for Americans,' a proposal that keeps the private insurance industry largely intact.

The initiative, introduced via social media, mimics the 'Medicare for All Who Want It' proposal championed by Pete Buttigieg during his 2020 presidential run. By framing the plan as a government-run program that competes with private insurers, the group attempts to steer the healthcare debate away from the single-payer model supported by figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Majority Democrats’ campaign video attacks the single-payer movement by citing a $40 trillion ten-year price tag for Medicare for All. However, this figure ignores the massive scale of current spending. The U.S. healthcare system cost $5.3 trillion in 2024 alone, a figure Yale School of Public Health researchers suggest is $1 trillion higher annually than the projected cost of a single-payer system. Critics, including analysts at The Lever, have labeled the new proposal the 'billionaire option,' arguing that it prioritizes the stability of private insurance over the widespread public demand for structural reform.
