Anbernic Targets Nintendo 3DS Nostalgia With New RG DDS Handheld

Anbernic has unveiled the RG DDS, a dedicated dual-screen handheld designed to emulate the Nintendo 3DS experience with modernized hardware. By matching the classic console's aspect ratios while significantly boosting resolution, the device aims to bridge the gap between retro software compatibility and contemporary mobile performance standards.

The RG DDS features a 4.7-inch top screen with a 1,200x720 resolution and a 4-inch bottom display at 960x720. These panels offer triple the pixel density of the original 3DS, facilitating cleaner scaling for emulated titles. Under the hood, the unit runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset, supported by a 6,000mAh battery, vibration feedback, and an integrated extendable stylus.

While the aesthetic closely mirrors the Nintendo 3DS, Anbernic has introduced functional hardware tweaks. The lower section includes an additional analog thumbstick to accommodate dual-stick 3D games. Furthermore, a button located near the bottom touchscreen—previously used for camera control on the New 3DS—now serves as a gateway to forthcoming AI features. Anbernic has also implemented a custom control center accessible directly via the lower display. The handheld will launch in blue, white, and black colorways, though the company has yet to confirm pricing or a specific release date.
