Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra: A High-Stakes AI Experiment

Priced at $5,900, Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Ultra is an ambitious attempt to challenge the MacBook Pro by integrating Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark chips. While the hardware design is undeniably premium, the machine’s real-world utility hinges on local AI capabilities that currently feel more like a beta than a finished product.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra: A High-Stakes AI Experiment

The laptop stands out with a 15-inch 3:2 MicroLED display peaking at 2,000 nits, surpassing Apple’s hardware in both brightness and aspect ratio. Microsoft has successfully crafted a premium chassis, complete with a large haptic trackpad and a clever Magnetic Connect system that utilizes a USB-C port for charging. However, the machine is plagued by early-stage software friction, including erratic battery indicators, display ghosting, and occasional audio interference that manifests as loud popping noises.

Performance is a mixed bag. The Nvidia RTX Spark platform, featuring a 20-core CPU and a powerful GPU, excels at gaming and CUDA-accelerated tasks that remain out of reach for Apple Silicon. Yet, in pure CPU benchmarks, it trails behind Apple’s M5 Max chips. The primary value proposition—local AI agents like Hermes and OpenClaw—is aimed strictly at developers. These tools offer privacy and offline processing but frequently push the hardware to its thermal limits, resulting in aggressive fan noise and slow task completion for basic operations. For power users willing to tinker, the Surface Laptop Ultra offers a glimpse into a specialized future; for everyone else, it remains a prohibitively expensive prototype.
