The decision surfaced through a notice on the manufacturer’s UK support portal, where Sony explained that the device’s storage configuration prevents an Android 17 upgrade experience deemed adequate by company standards. While the firm apologized for failing to meet its original announcement, owners of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1-powered handset will still receive security patches through June 2028.
Sony maintains that this restriction is isolated to the specific technical architecture of the Xperia 10 VI and will not affect other models in its current lineup. Despite these assurances, the sudden reversal casts a shadow over the reliability of future update promises, particularly as the exact hardware requirements for subsequent Android iterations remain unconfirmed.
