Replit Shifts AI Strategy, Ending Anthropic Partnership

Replit has officially moved away from its partnership with AI lab Anthropic, CEO Amjad Masad revealed Thursday at TechCrunch Disrupt. The decision marks a significant pivot for the coding platform, which had previously relied on Anthropic’s Claude models to power its cloud-based software development environment and drive revenue growth.

Replit Shifts AI Strategy, Ending Anthropic Partnership

Masad cited a combination of cost efficiency and model performance as the primary drivers for the change. While Replit recently announced a new partnership with OpenAI in August, Masad noted that internal benchmarks now favor OpenAI’s models for building applications from scratch. Despite this public declaration, the transition remains muddled; sources familiar with the matter suggested the partnership may still be active, and company documentation from September explicitly referenced Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and 3.5 Haiku models running within the Replit Agent environment.

Beyond the infrastructure shuffle, Masad highlighted a broader shift in the company’s business model. Enterprise contracts have surged to represent 15% of total revenue this year, up from just 2% in 2025, with B2B services now accounting for over half of the platform's intake. As Replit scales, Masad emphasized that the future of development lies in creating secure, orchestrated 'habitats' for AI agents, prioritizing sandboxing and identity authorization to ensure safe deployment.
