IDF Ignored Distress Calls During Violent Settler Attack on Diplomats

Masked settlers armed with metal bars assaulted a delegation of European diplomats near the West Bank village of Taybeh this weekend, an incident that followed reports that the Israeli military ignored multiple warnings and distress calls regarding the unfolding violence against the visiting officials and local Palestinian civilians.

IDF Ignored Distress Calls During Violent Settler Attack on Diplomats

According to reporting by Haaretz, an activist on the ground attempted to alert the IDF brigade’s operations room after witnessing attacks on Palestinian olive pickers. Because the soldiers did not recognize the sender’s phone number, the message was ignored and never relayed to forces in the field. The assault left 78-year-old French mayor Bernard Baudoux hospitalized after he was thrown to the ground and beaten, while other diplomats from Belgium and Poland were also targeted.

While Israeli authorities announced the arrest of 10 suspects on Monday, observers remain skeptical of a genuine judicial outcome. Mairav Zonszein of the International Crisis Group described the arrests as a performative measure to save face, predicting the suspects would be released shortly. This incident follows the brutal beating of Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, an American citizen, by settlers just one day prior. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has publicly questioned the accounts of both attacks, demanding further evidence.

Anti-occupation group Breaking the Silence argued that the military’s recurring bureaucratic excuses mask a deliberate policy. They contend that such violence is a tool of state-backed intimidation designed to facilitate annexation and the displacement of Palestinians. US Rep. Gregory Meeks condemned the escalation, calling for an end to the culture of impunity that has defined the region's recent security landscape.
