Rights Group Demands 'No ICE' Zones at Midterm Polling Sites

Human Rights Watch is calling for the immediate designation of 'No ICE' zones around polling stations and ballot drop boxes, warning that the potential presence of immigration enforcement agents threatens to intimidate voters and suppress turnout during the upcoming midterm elections.

Rights Group Demands 'No ICE' Zones at Midterm Polling Sites

Philippe Bolopion, executive director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized that voters should not fear being caught in a federal dragnet while exercising their civic duty. Although federal and state laws generally restrict the presence of armed officials near voting sites, neither the White House nor federal security agencies have explicitly ruled out the deployment of ICE agents at polling locations. This ambiguity persists despite public assurances from some officials that no such plans exist.

Public anxiety remains high, particularly among nonwhite communities. A recent survey from the University of California, San Diego, found that 40% of respondents expect to see immigration enforcers at the polls. This climate of distrust is exacerbated by ongoing rhetoric regarding election integrity and isolated reports of National Guard sightings near drop boxes, such as in Washington, D.C.’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood. With three federal lawsuits currently pending to block potential ICE operations at voting sites, advocates insist that clear, public directives are necessary to ensure the ballot box remains a space free from intimidation.
