Critics Decry ADL’s New 'Mamdani Monitor' as Targeted Harassment

The Anti-Defamation League faces a wave of backlash following its announcement of a dedicated initiative to monitor the incoming administration of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, with civil rights advocates and political observers labeling the move as an act of bad-faith political intimidation.

Critics Decry ADL’s New 'Mamdani Monitor' as Targeted Harassment

The ADL, led by executive director Jonathan Greenblatt, plans to track the policies and personnel appointments of Mamdani’s government, explicitly framing the effort as a necessity to combat antisemitism. Critics argue the project is a calculated attempt to equate legitimate criticism of Israeli state policy with hate speech. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the initiative as hypocrisy, noting the organization has never established similar oversight for other elected officials who have expressed overt bigotry.

Journalist Sana Saeed and various advocacy groups have characterized the monitor as a form of racialized targeting. Dylan Williams of the Center for International Policy highlighted the lack of a similar tracking mechanism for the Trump administration, despite its ties to groups harboring anti-Jewish views. Peter Sterne of City & State NY suggested the project mirrors the tactics of the anonymously run 'Canary Mission' website, which aims to blacklist pro-Palestinian academics and activists.

Mayor-elect Mamdani, who recently pledged to work alongside Jewish New Yorkers to combat genuine hate, expressed skepticism regarding the ADL’s objectivity. He cited Greenblatt’s previous false claims about his campaign’s engagement with local synagogues as evidence of the group’s lack of impartiality. Despite the pressure, Mamdani maintains that his administration will remain committed to equality, even as the ADL attempts to position his policy positions—specifically his critiques of Israel—as existential threats to the city’s Jewish residents.
