Federal Food Aid Cuts Disproportionately Impact Latino Families

More than 1.5 million Latinos have lost access to federal food assistance since the enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in July 2025. This analysis highlights a sharp decline in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation, as new, stringent qualification requirements create significant barriers for vulnerable populations across the country.

The report, issued by Unrig Our Economy and Americans for Tax Fairness, reveals that seven states—Texas, Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Iowa—account for over 771,000 of these losses. Texas remains the most affected, with approximately 396,164 residents losing coverage. Critics argue these changes serve to finance tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, leaving families to navigate rising costs for basic necessities.

While the Trump administration maintains that the updated rules ensure benefits reach only the most needy, advocates report that complex compliance procedures have effectively locked out qualified applicants, including veterans and those experiencing homelessness. The broader impact of these policies has been significant, with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reporting that SNAP enrollment dropped by over 5 million people in the year following the law's passage. This trend aligns with findings from the New York Federal Reserve, which noted a surge in food insecurity among low-income households and families with young children.
