US Military Strike in Caribbean Kills Four Amid Mounting Scrutiny

The US Southern Command confirmed Wednesday that a "lethal kinetic strike" on a vessel in the Caribbean resulted in four deaths, pushing the estimated toll of the administration's maritime bombing campaign to at least 163 since September. Critics and legal experts continue to denounce the operations as extrajudicial killings.

The military described the operation as an effort to apply systemic friction against cartels, claiming the targeted vessel was operated by a designated terrorist organization. Brian Finucane, a senior adviser at the International Crisis Group, characterized the Pentagon’s official phrasing as "a lot of words for murder." The incident marks nearly 50 such strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific over the last six months, a campaign largely shielded from congressional oversight by Republican lawmakers who have blocked attempts to curb the military's authority.

Controversy surrounding the intelligence behind these strikes intensified this week following a New York Times investigation. The report suggested that a previous joint operation with Ecuadorian forces destroyed a civilian cattle farm rather than a drug-trafficking compound. Representative Don Beyer, a Democrat from Virginia, described the findings as abhorrent, noting that the administration’s reliance on dubious evidence to justify lethal force raises fundamental questions about the legitimacy of the entire operation. Amnesty International and various UN experts have repeatedly warned that these actions violate international law.
