Meta’s Quarterly Earnings Stung by Billion-Dollar Child Safety Payouts

A massive $9.89 billion charge tied to a child safety settlement has left a significant dent in Meta’s third-quarter financials. Without the legal payout, the tech giant’s operating income would have reached $22.89 billion, highlighting the mounting costs of ongoing litigation surrounding the company’s platform design.

Meta’s Quarterly Earnings Stung by Billion-Dollar Child Safety Payouts

The settlement, finalized in August, stems from nationwide lawsuits alleging that Meta intentionally engineered its social media platforms to be addictive for minors. While the total agreement sits at $17.1 billion, the company’s liability could decrease by $5.3 billion if competitors like YouTube and TikTok adopt stricter safety safeguards for younger users. Despite these heavy expenses, which contributed to total quarterly costs of $51.61 billion, the company reported $64.60 billion in revenue—a 26 percent jump year-over-year.

Legal headwinds show no signs of dissipating for Mark Zuckerberg’s firm. On the same day the earnings report dropped, a New Mexico court ordered the company to pay $25 billion regarding the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. Zuckerberg remains focused on long-term growth, citing the rollout of personal superintelligence and strong core business performance as evidence that the company’s current investment strategy remains on track.
