European Parliament President Roberta Metsola hailed the court for upholding international law, a sentiment echoed by ICC president Tomoko Akane, who noted that the institution currently faces unprecedented challenges. The recognition arrives after the Trump administration declared its intent to handicap the court, following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has explicitly stated a goal to dismantle the body, while the US has moved to isolate the court from essential financial and technological services.
While the prize provides a symbolic victory for the court, European lawmakers are divided on whether solidarity is sufficient. There is growing pressure from various parliamentary blocs for the European Commission to trigger the EU Blocking Statute, a legal mechanism designed to shield European entities from the extraterritorial reach of US sanctions. Despite these calls, the Commission has yet to commit to a timeline for such defensive measures, leaving the court in a precarious position as it navigates the clash between its mandate and the current American administration's geopolitical agenda.
