Sigma FP2 Refines the World’s Smallest Full-Frame Camera

Seven years after debuting the original fp, Sigma is launching the FP2, a compact mirrorless successor that sacrifices a marginal six grams of weight to accommodate an articulating screen, a 24.5-megapixel partially stacked sensor, and enhanced autofocus capabilities, arriving on November 11th with a starting price of $2,199.

The core of the upgrade is a new back-side illuminated CMOS sensor. While the resolution remains effectively unchanged, the switch to a partially stacked architecture enables faster data throughput. This allows for 20fps burst shooting and expanded autofocus tracking, which now includes bird recognition alongside people and animals. Video performance sees a similar boost, peaking at 6K at 60fps, or 4K at 120fps using a sensor crop.

Sigma addressed common criticisms of the original model by adding a 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen that doubles as a thermal management tool, extending away from the body to aid cooling during long recording sessions. Connectivity is also more robust, featuring a full-size HDMI port and dual USB-C ports, one of which supports 10Gbps transfers for external SSD recording. While the camera lacks a second card slot, it includes 70GB of internal storage as a buffer. Despite a 40-gram increase in total system weight, the higher-capacity battery offers 30 percent more endurance, totaling roughly 370 photos or 130 minutes of video per charge.
