Garena Relaunches Free Fire in India After Four-Year Ban

Four years after New Delhi shuttered the hit battle royale title over national security concerns, Garena has officially brought Free Fire back to the Indian market. The new, localized version arrives with strict data sovereignty measures and player-protection features, marking a significant pivot for the Singapore-based publisher.

Garena Relaunches Free Fire in India After Four-Year Ban

Free Fire India now functions as a standalone application on Android and iOS, featuring localized content designed to meet government standards. The developer, a subsidiary of the South Asian firm Sea, has implemented mandatory parental controls, playtime limits, and spending caps to address regulatory scrutiny. Crucially, all user data is now housed on domestic servers, a direct response to the security apprehensions that triggered the 2022 ban.

Despite the original game’s removal, Garena maintained a foothold in the region through Free Fire MAX, which escaped the initial crackdown. The company’s head of operations in India, Vaibhav Das Mundhra, confirmed that both versions will coexist, allowing players to synchronize accounts and compete in unified events. The move intensifies the local competition against Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India, which has struggled to replicate the massive user engagement Garena enjoys in the country.

Market data underscores why Garena fought to retain its presence: India saw two billion mobile game downloads in the second quarter alone, generating over $106 million in revenue. For the local esports ecosystem, the return of the flagship title offers a vital boost. Industry leaders like Animesh Agarwal of S8UL Esports suggest the relaunch provides a necessary infrastructure for professional players and content creators who have long awaited the franchise’s full-scale return to the mainstream.
