Trump Administration Backs Nuclear Expansion for Tech Giants

The U.S. Department of Energy has pledged $5 billion in loans to Constellation Energy, aimed at boosting nuclear capacity by 1.1 gigawatts. This government-backed expansion is designed to fuel the voracious energy demands of AI data centers, with Google, Meta, and Amazon already securing the lion’s share of the new output.

Constellation plans to deploy these funds to "uprate" 11 existing reactors across eight power plants located in Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. By utilizing more highly enriched uranium and upgrading essential hardware, the company intends to increase output at facilities including Braidwood, Byron, and Calvert Cliffs. While the Department of Energy frames the move as a boon for grid reliability and consumer affordability, the company has offered no assurance that electricity rates for residential households will actually decrease.

For the tech industry, this deal represents a strategic play in the race to secure power for energy-intensive AI infrastructure. Meta has already moved to effectively claim the entire output of the Clinton plant in Illinois, while Google and Amazon have locked in agreements for capacity across the other sites. By lowering financing costs for these upgrades, the federal loan program essentially subsidizes the energy supply chain for the world’s largest tech firms, potentially padding profit margins for both the energy provider and the hyperscalers themselves.
